Posts: 1153 12/28/08 06:19 fair dinkum	For the last few years, I've thought he's well-equipped to be a politician. Today's Sunday Times has an interview with Hugh. It first appeared in the US Men's Journal last year but it's good to see it in one of the big Sunday newspapers. (The photos used are from 2006 and were previously used in Premiere and Men's Health) ...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening. Last Edited By: narrows101 12/28/08 06:39. The work appealed to the documentarian and portrait artist in her, and it paid the bills. More than 100 films later Ms. Mark culled thousands of images, both impromptu and staged, for her latest book, "Seen behind the scene/Forty years of photographing on set/Mary Ellen Mark" (Phaidon). Some of the images will be on view at the Staley-Wise Gallery in SoHo starting Jan. 9. "Film work is the best kind of commercial work," she said. "When I'm on film sets, I've seen amazing people work, and I've learned some things." Things have changed in the four decades between Federico Fellini's "Satyricon" and Baz Luhrmann's "Australia." "It used to be I could go on a film set and wander around," she said. "I think people were more trusting, and there was also less of this incredible cult of the celebrity and all the stuff around it, which makes it harder to get access." The fear of failure always loomed. "It goes along with being a photographer because the responsibility for the shot always falls back on you," she said, recalling the time she locked the playwright August Wilson in her loft until he agreed to sit still. "It's hard having your picture taken." Here she speaks with Kathryn Shattuck about five photos included in the book. Sigh, I wish we'd see some merch from this film. Im not even seeing any postcards or flyers at cinemas I go to. Let alone the possibility of a soundtrack and coffee table book. AUSTRALIA Northern Territory and Western Australia In director Baz Luhrmann's tribute to his native Australia, aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) takes an arduous journey across the country with a rough-and-tumble stockman named the Drover (Hugh Jackman) as World War II is about to break out. Arriving in Oz Sarah disembarks from a ship in Darwin, Australia, with so much baggage that she has to enlist four porters to help her off the vessel. The scene was shot in Bowen, a beach town in northeastern Queensland with excellent snorkeling and diving; local outfitter Aussie Reef Dive offers half- and full-day trips to several nearby dive sites (aussiereefdive.com.au, from $37). Beau of the ball Sarah is surprised to see a rather dapper-looking Drover, whom she hired to help her drive cattle across Australia, at a high-society party one evening. The scene was filmed at Strickland House, an 1850s Italianate villa in Sydney, built for the city's first elected mayor, John Hosking. You can only tour the home once a year (the 2009 date is April 13), but visitors can stroll through the villa's manicured grounds year-round and eat a picnic lunch on a hill that overlooks Sydney Harbour (011-61/2-9337-5999, house tour $3). In love in the Outback Sparks fly between Sarah and the Drover as they traverse hundreds of miles across the Outback to a cattle station that Sarah has inherited in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. "The area has the most incredible sunsets and sunrises, and practically everything in the scene is authentic-the sunshine really burns, the dust is real," says James Fisher, one of the film's still photographers. You can explore this rugged countryside with Kununurra Scenic Bus Tours, which leads trips through the red-rock valley that surrounds the Ord River, with stops at an aboriginal art gallery and Ivanhoe Crossing, which has some of the best crocodile spotting in the region (011-61/437-058-673, ksbtours.net, from $70).

Nicole mentioned that Baz would just get heaps of unscripted shots of them kissing randomly whenever the lighting was good. So maybe some are in promos but not in the film for that reason. ALSO Stewie...or well, one of the early reviews, actually probably not him, but didnt some guy say there was way too much kissing? I wish Stewie would come back and tell us how different the final version is (assuming he saw it) from the test screening he saw. I even remember one of us showing him that EW photo that wasn't in the movie and asked him if it looked familiar and he answered in a way that led us to believe it was in the movie. Ha!
