LOL! Love Hugh's face in that pic! But yeah, I reckon it was photoshopped. Such a silly thing to report - they probably did it because of all the renewed
publicity about Janet Jackson's flash at the Superbowl

I forget Hugh's exact answer but he had no clue about it and was clearly embarrassed by the question. I remember him dismissing it and saying " Oh, C'mon...". Hugh may be a bit too talkative at times (did you guys see the Howard Stern interview on video?) but he is always a gentleman. |

The Academy announced today that they are expanding the Best Picture nominees from five to ten - still with one winner. Wonder if that was in effect this year
if Australia may have made the cut.

10? Oh my gosh, imagine how long the Oscar ceremony will go for now with 10 Best Picture nominee clips to shown instead of 5, lol
And wow, just one year too late for Australia... but yeah, I wonder if it would have made the cut even with 10 nominees, given the lukewarm reception it received in the US? I would like to think so, but I guess we'll never know... |

Ten, wow?? Weird.
Is it an attempt to gain more viewers?? ie more fans will watch if their fave film is nominated? ![]()

Congrats to Hugh and Mandy!
Also to Clint Mansell, who composed that haunting score for The Fountain! |

Congrats Hugh and Mandy! (And yay, this will mean two extra votes for whatever movie Baz does next, lol!)
Oh a separate note, I have recently found out why By The Boab Tree was not nominated for Best Song at this year's Oscars... (Apologies if this was discussed ages ago but, if it was, I've forgotten, lol!) There was no nomination because David Hirschfelder had major credit for the soundtrack, but By The Boab Tree was actually composed by other people, therefore it wasn't eligible. Apparently, the Academy have since changed the rules (because the soundtrack for The Dark Knight had more than one composer). So unfortunately, this beautiful song missed out because of outdated rules that got changed for DK, but not for Australia *grumbles*

I have also read that one of the changes for 2010 ( not sure if this has been approved or just being contemplated) is that should the Academy feel that no one
song is "good enough" for a nomination, that none will be given.

Oh a separate note, I have recently found out why By The Boab Tree was not nominated for Best Song at this year's Oscars... (Apologies if this was discussed ages ago but, if it was, I've forgotten, lol!) Regarding the above, I have some corrections to make... It turns out that the rules for Best Song actually changed some time in 2008 (probably late 2008) and therefore, By The Boab Tree was eligible to be nominated for Best Song. Indeed, it was put forward by Meagher, Little and Luhrmann and made the short list. Unfortunately, the reason the song lost out was most probably due to its poor reception in the US. Although the movie did well across Europe, when they voted on 6 January, the judges were probably just going by the US reaction... |

I think Hugh's hosting of the Oscars boosted his chances for an invitation
... There were many people who were astounded that he hosted a show of the
Academy and yet he was not even a member of AMPAS, despite his work in the movies. I bet Sid Ganis made sure that Hugh was nominated, if that was one of his
last acts before he stepped down from the AMPAS presidency
On the theatre side, Hugh also serves on the Advisory Committee of the AMERICAN THEATRE WING, the organization which originated the TONYs. Now that he is going back to Broadway ( latest buzz is that A STEADY RAIN is going to open for previews on September 10), he is actively thriving on a dual career. There will be a few Hollywood stars who will be on Broadway this season, apart from Hugh ( Daniel Craig, Julia Styles, Bill Pulman in their Broadway debuts), so, many actors are now finding both branches of the performing arts equally professionally satisfying. The one production featuring movie stars that I wish I could see - but won't be able to - is the Paris production of Sondheim's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC ( famous for its song "Send In The Clowns", and a movie version with Elizabeth Taylor) with Kristin Scott Thomas ( was she nominated for The English Patient?) and the ageless Leslie Caron ( Lily, Gigi, American in Paris) - they both speak French but this production will be an English version. |
