Yes, I did indeed suggest that Jack could play the husband, as he is older, and Hugh would be a much more attractive love rival to steal Nic's heart...

We don't know for sure, but it's a possibility. It's also a possibility that Jack could be playing a more minor role, such as the cattle baron. It's fun to speculate

Remember that the script has been changing all the time - I'm sure it still is being changed even now! So the story could have been altered somewhat to accomodate Jack's age.

And also remember that Heath Ledger was rumoured to play the third lead at one point! Now we're getting even younger, lol! Hugh and Heath were the two names I remember being mentioned back when Russ was originally going to play the male lead... and so yes, I did originally think the husband character would be younger, but with Baz, anything's possible!

You know, I can't actually remember if Heath was actually offered the role... I think it was rather elusive, with no direct quotes or anything. However, his name wasn't attached for long, so even if the role was offered to him, he would have passed straight away, probably to do another film.

LOL! I too wish we knew Hugh's character's name! They revealed Nic's, so why not Hugh's? Perhaps Baz did mention it at the press conference but the silly media didn't think it important enough to report...

Russ was indeed quoted as saying he cried when he read the script for Australia. So yes, I too have assumed since then that someone will die... and it will probably be either Hugh or Nic's character...

I actually think it might be Nic's character that dies. She is the one who will undergo a life-changing journey in the film - from English aristocrat to tough female drover The saddest way to end a film is to have the character who has learned and changed for the better to be tragically killed, perhaps dying in the arms of her newfound lover (Hugh). Knowing Baz, this is probably what he'd do! Just look at Nic's character in Moulin Rouge. She was miserable in her 'old' life, then found love with Christian, and then just as she became happy she found out she was going to die. I think in Australia the death will be sudden and unexpected rather than predetermined, but its kind of the same line of story telling...

That's just me guessing though. I could be wrong and it may turn out to be Hugh's character instead. Losing her newfound lover who has helpedopen her eyes and given her a new purpose in life would also be a very tragic ending... Perhaps they are about to take over the cattle station and live a happy life together when Hugh gets targeted and she is left to once again fend for herself? Oooh, the possibilities, hey?

Oh yes, the climax, the bombing of Darwin! Will poor Hugh or Nic get blown up? Or perhaps one will die trying to save the other? Oooh, the mind boggles. But there's bound to be lots of holding in arms, gasping for last breaths and "don't die on me, I love you" dialogue. It's such fun to speculate!
