I've been telling everyone I can think of to go and see it.
Hmmmm, maybe I can sneak another viewing in myself!

It does just say they are estimates though, not sure what they're basing that off off...

BoxOfficeMojo does estimates very well - they are one of the most reliable sites for box office results, especially in the USA.

The brits are jealous and publishing their rants for major newspapers:
http://www.telegraph.co.u...es-from-your-Lemmies.html Insted of yelling, Im going to lol. Because the infection they're talking about is liking the movie, so yes, beware, seeing the movie WILL infect you, same with the trailer. Best be a hobbit or you might experience something meaningful in your cinema for once ![]()

Some supposed reasoning why the movie "didn't work" according to the Sunday Telegraph...

I started off bristling because of the snarky comments in the beginning, but by the end, I thought they had some good points. So pulling out the last section:
Australia just wasn't marketed as a young, vibrant, risky film. It was sold as an unthreatening showcase for nostalgic totty. Unless your picture is screening exclusively to the silky-knitwear set at the Cremorne Orpheum, nostalgia's not enough. I liked the "a bit like teenagers being asked to tidy their rooms" because that's just what we were seeing at IMDB. And would any of us disagree about "More, and raunchier, sex scenes" or at least seeing more of the relationship.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Agree re the sex scene LOL... I think by putting everything into the movie - love story, cattle drive, war scenes - they thought they were appealing to
everybody which truthfully I thought also. Still don't get what the title has to do with it - a lot of movies have the title of the country/city in their
names!

I thought the article was thoughtful - even from the start.

I have to agree about what that article said about the advertising for the movie.
I always thought that the studio could have done more to stress the 'Baz-ness' of the film. They could have marketed it in different ways - showing more than just an outback romance/adventure. And I still believe the first trailer we saw with Lady A wanting to 'tell a story' was just too... stiff. I don't know, I was never that fond of it, and I much preferred the later trailer with the larger, more impressive scope. I know that advertising was out of Baz's hands, and I reckon even the amount of sex scenes was out of his hands because of the rating! So I blame Fox |

Robert Ebert addresses the villification of Nicole Kidman and writes a little about his review of Australia. Do read.
Gossips as birds of prey I loved this piece in the comments from someone calling himself Jeremy Knox: Know who I blame the most for this sort of BS though? Not the public and not the journalist. The average joe will watch anything and the average entertainment journalist only writes what sells. No, I blame the fanboys. You know who I mean. Those people who like NOTHING, who spend all their time tearing a movie apart instead of you know... watching it. I'm not talking about movie buffs, you're a movie buff and I'm a movie buff. There's lots of us out there. But the fanboy is a different animal. I'm talking about someone who can tell you every goof in a film but hasn't the first clue about it's subtext or themes. About someone who loves specific film(s), director(s), actor(s) and refuses to watch anything unfamiliar like some sort of film savant. Fanboys don't love film, they don't love the pure joy of discovering something new, something interesting. They don't even really love the films that they so fanatically worship, they love the past and are trying to re-experience that first moment where they felt a film move them. Irony at it's finest.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Whoa - that was a long and absorbing read (Ebert and feedback). Thanks!
What an interesting discussion of a cultural phenomenon now occuring. It is a sad commentary of how materialistic and unkind many elements of society have become |

So true about the budget figure, Im seeing it over at IMDb already, people are starting to bump up the figure it supposedly cost to make, then once it reaches
that, they're bumping up the "real" figure it needs to make to raise a profit, sigh
As for the Nicole article, it's good that she at least has a few people who can recognise something suss is going on when they see it. I too agree that it should be a group effort, if it succeeds they all succeed, if it failed they all did. Not this singling out stuff. Again, not that we want to drag Hugh down, but if there are invalid attacks at Nicole, it's VERY rough that he and others escape unscathed. Just shows the random judgement of some people. But then I guess the rabid fanboys could never take down Wolverine ...he's like Christ, right? lol

I don't think Hugh is unscathed. There are plenty of comments about how he can't open a movie, but they're just not as vitriolic.

Well at least it's in (some) good company. I can't believe some of these "critics" put Australia # 1 against crap like a Paris Hilton movie
for example.

From an interview with Darren Aronofsky in the Sydney

Asked whether there's any lingering bad vibes about Australia given the experience, he's quick off the blocks.
