Not always I don't think because it doesn't seem like BB is getting anything other than love, but the prime example of a big movie that prior to its
release was said to be the biggest disaster of cinema history is Titanic, so as long as the movie is good, it all doesn't really matter.

The Daily Telegraph article on the film is very sobering but also very informative. Hadn't we been talking about these numbers before -- when we realized
it was going to go somewhat over budget because partly of filming delays ( the flood at Kununurra and the equine flu) and because they had announced a very
large promotion budget to support it -- so a total cost of somewhat over $ 200 million was not totally unexpected. We also know that the studio gets back only
about half of box office receipts ( the other half goes to the distributos/theaters) in general -- so the target of $ 400 million to break even was in the
horizon.
Big numbers -- but if movies like Mamma Mia! can run up very huge b.o. numbers on a worldwide basis and it is not necessarily a movie that caters to the young male demos, shouldn't there be some measure of optimism for AUSTRALIA if it also perceived as a tremendous crowd pleaser ? It is the gossipy and negative type of publicity that makes us a little nervous -- I think it could be because it is beginning to be perceived by Hollywood as a possible dual success - at the box office and at the Oscars. Tall poppy syndrome is not a monopoly of the Aussies
I was hoping that the Fox publicity and marketing machine were on top of this -- but sometimes I cannot understand why something negative is allowed to fester before there is damage limitation. Or are they also using the value of negative hype ...so long as the movie is talked about ??? In the final analysis, it is what Baz, Nicole, Hugh, CM, Mandy, and all those hardworking Aussies will deliver that will decide the fate of the movie, no matter what hype is generated before the movie is released. Let's hope it is the highest-decibel applause that greets the movie as soon as it is premiered to the world. .. |

*headdesk about the Brandon thing.* Like the article also says, Im sure a lot of it is ADR, though a few clips on the site have me worried about the amount and
match ups in ADR, hopefully it's just an internet quality thing...that and this film can kiiind of get away with it because of its style.
I must hop down and have a look if it is near my hotel, cant find the address though!? K, found it, posting here for future ref, dunno if it will be worth heading out to, but we'll see http://www.eqmoorepark.com.au/getting-there/ ![]()

Oh, I was certainly excited. I liked the headline and that Anne Thompson appears to attribute the "will he make it?" aspects to Baz's dramatic
flair. That's something I suspected all along but I was still scared in case there really was a problem.
It's funny how the media seems to build on negative buzz even if there's little to support it. The Oprah gushing seems to have turned it around. A lot of critics seem to follow fashion - they don't want to be caught out giving a rave to something everyone else dismisses as mediocre.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

We must be quite excited at this account of Anne Thompson that I was just about to post the third copy of the article
At least the public now has the correct account from Anne's reassuring words of the tale of the making of AUSTRALIA, down to the finish line! It's good that she has mentioned Oprah's rave ( I wonder how this can be repeated over and over in some media outlet?)... Such excellent recommendation - I wonder how many critics will ( dare) go against such an unabashed and resounding endorsement of a movie!! And by someone considered the most influential woman at least in media. I am glad Oprah and her audience's show of absolute support for the film came before any critic can report on the movie
November 26 cannot come too soon. In the meantime, I am eagerly awaiting Kate's account of her night with the stars, eh RHPS Magenta ?

Re: General Movie Discussion [POST-production] | #38 | ||
This is an interesting article with quotes for Tom O'Neil which I don't quite agree about but it does
show how Oprah's endorsement completely turned the Australia buzz from shaky to good. I thought the most recent trailer did turn things around also, the
last 2 at least and interesting what he says about American critics dreading seeing it, exactly why this movie should surprise everyone since according to
O'Neil pretty much all of them are expecting a dud.
