Yea I think that was a good article even if it was about the negatives, but at least she wrote it with an "aw that's too bad because I really liked
the film" tone. I like Thompson as she really thinks things through and does her research prior.

Well Thompson's piece has made it to the NY Times blog, so more ammunition for the haters. And then there's this - is it just me or does it seem like
this is the movie to pick on this year? Last year I think it was The Golden Compass.

But look at the reply to the NYTimes blogger's twisting of what Anne Thompson wrote --

That's what I thought too, she was truly writing off facts and never did she beat on Hugh's acting skills, she actually said he can do anything and is
excited for his turn on Musicals hopefully in Cleo. Also earlier in the year when talking about who people want to host the Oscars, she said that her dream
thing would be Hugh doing an opening number much like he did in the 04 Tonys, so she's by far a Hugh hater.

Thanks for the heads-up to go over there and read them - I can't get my link to be clickable so it's going to have to be cut and pasted. |

narrows101 wrote:They may have picked on TGC in the States last year, but overseas, it went on to make $300m. That is more than most of the movies that crossed the $100m line in the US made. The blame for the failure of this movie sits squarely with Fox. Their shoddyness in how they handled it or were handling it was obvious months before its release. They will lose money but it is the stars of the movie who will be left to carry the can, actually, its leading lady is already carrying the can. |

The poor performance of The Golden Compass in the US had nothing to do with Nicole Kidman and everything to do with a bunch of ignorant bigots who
told people it wasn't safe to let their children watch it because it might encourage them to read the books. Nicole was only a supporting actor in it
anyway.
Anne Thompson makes some good points: - Will Smith is the only real box office star - Baz Luhrmann's last minute delivery of the film didn't help I'm hating the wait until the UK release. Because I've been following the US/AU release it's all beginning to feel a bit stale and the UK promotion hasn't even begun (but watch BBC2 at 10pm tomorrow).
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

This is not good stuff but I did a bit of background research that I thougt I'd share.
First, The Herald Sun carries an attack by Andrew Bolt against Hugh for spreading misinformation about The Stolen Generation. To support his case he refers to a man called Harry Kitching who had the job of implementing the policy in NT. However, a search on "Harry Kitching" brings up other articles where he talks about regrets, for example: "I didn't like that policy of having to take children just because they were half-caste," he says. "Sometimes it was not necessary and my heart wasn't in it. You felt they'd be better off staying with their families."Sydney Morning Herald. That article also says he was in the service from 1947 (ie five years after the time period of the film). Wikipedia has a lot of information and references for the issue. It also has an entry for Andrew Bolt that includes this: Bolt has frequently clashed with Robert Manne, Professor of Politics at La Trobe University, notably about the Stolen Generation. Bolt claims that there were no large-scale removals of children "for purely racist reasons". After Bolt challenged Manne to "name just 10" children stolen for racial reasons,[10] Manne gave him a list of 12 names which, Bolt contends, includes children rescued from sexual abuse and removed for other humanitarian reasons.[11] Manne has recently argued that Bolt's failure to address the wealth of documentary and anecdotal evidence demonstrating the existence of the Stolen Generation amounts to a clear case of historical denialism[12]. Bolt has noted multiple incidents of contemporary Aboriginal children being left "in grave danger that we would not tolerate for children of any other race because we are so terrified of the 'stolen generations' myth."[13] On Channel Nine's A Current Affair program along with Aboriginal activist Michael Mansell he was asked why the Australian government should not be apologising for the stolen generations. His response was that Australia should be apologising for other matters but not for the stolen generations as he believes this is false due to Aboriginal children being removed for their own protection from being brought up in harmful environments. My take is that as with any uncomfortable piece of history, there are people who try to prove it wasn't so. However, I'm also willing to believe that Baz has exaggerated in order to make a good story (eg putting the children in peril on the island and removing the child from white foster-parents).
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Which -- Luhrmann admits -- is "extremely uncool" but is likely to hit a nerve among Oscar voters nostalgic for the emotional epics of John Ford, David Lean and George Stevens, all of whom Luhrmann cites as inspirations. I hope the Academy Award voters appreciate the ambition and sweep of AUSTRALIA better than the Golden Globes and some movie critics have. |

Ms. Thompson's article not nearly as violent against Australia as you suggest. And nowhere in her piece does Ms. Thompson suggest that Hugh Jackman lacks range! She actually says unequivocally "He can do anything" (and cites her hopes that he will one day do a movie musical), which is absolutely true. Anyone fortunate enough to see Mr. Jackman on stage or in such films as The Prestige and The Fountain already knows this. I feel that she is acknowledging the short-sightedness of US movie audiences (and, frankly, major studios) who only want actors to play variations on the roles in which they first discovered them; for Mr. Jackman, that means Wolverine. Non-US film audiences and critics don't seem to fixate on locking actors into particular role types the way we do here. Those who have only heard about the now-fabled bucket-shower scene in Australia are missing out completely if they think that is all there is to Mr. Jackman's Drover in Australia. Mr. Jackman gives a lovely, quietly strong performance in Australia. The focus on his physical attributes that Baz Luhrmann intended only as a wink to certain archetypes has been blown out of all proportion by the media, which should instead point out the fine, emotionally true work Mr. Jackman delivers in this film. He takes on an iconic film-role type and imbues it with a warm, beating heart.
I agree that Australia has been badly marketed in this country, and it is playing in several hundred fewer theatres than the other films ahead of it at the box office. It deserves a better support system than the one Fox is giving it so far; perhaps the studio will learn that as it readies the film for its December releases overseas.
