Longtime fans of Hugh would remember his anecdote about his being asked to sing AUSTRALIA FAIR at a rugby championship -- but he said there were 30,000 Kiwis
booing him ....and 70,000 Aussies roaring for him. If I remember right, he even talked about how intimidating the dance of the All-Blacks were when he was
singing

Great passing of the torch photo -- from Sophia to Nicole to Kate! Who will be the next generation? Anne Hathaway, perhaps? |

Miss Brooke wrote: What I got out of that NZ joke was NZ is smaller than Australia, to go with the downsizing theme. The one joke I think did fall flat was the Sexiest Man Alive thing he did with Brad - no one laughed, unless they didn't hear it. |

Yeah, I didn't even understand what he was saying to Brad. I think it was about something that happened to his clothes ( wardrobe malfunction?) after the
Opening number ( he was fiddling with it when he was first talking to Anne and Frank L) - something like Brad should have given him a tip about clothes???

It was something like "you think the sexiest man alive would know how to dress himself" - I understood it but I don't have my tape in front of me
right now.

Oh great picture! I thought Nicole looked so beautiful. Her pearly white skin and her shorter hair style went perfect with the dress.

Now, three days later, I'm finally ready to comment about the Oscars! I thought Hugh was amazing! I LOVED the opening number - he is so talented and I
think everyone was blown away by his dancing and singing skills! I adored the Frost/Nixon section "Mr. Frost, I think I love you!", "Oh,
Nixon", lol! And especially the part about "The Reader", too funny! I also loved that he said "hi Sarah Jessica", lol! Brought back
all those Tonys memories! Also, did you guys notice when Hugh was singing to Kate Winslet and Sarah Jessica and Matthew were right behind her? I loved how they
cracked up when Hugh sang his line about "human excrement"!
Honestly, at first I didn't know what to think of the middle number by Baz. It wasn't until I viewed it a couple more times that I realized how great it really was and how much of a nod it was to Moulin Rouge. I truly appreciate Baz's vision and his love for classic musicals! Though I'd rather watch Hugh and Anne Hathaway vs. Hugh and Beyonce, but still, how cute was it to watch Hugh in a top hat and tails dancing up and down those stairs. His enthusiasm really made everything come together. Otherwise, I wish we'd gotten to see more of Hugh during the rest of the show. But I guess that Barbara Walters interview with the lap dance made up for it! |

Did we all see the Drover spitting? When a past Oscar winner was talking about one of the acting nominees, they were framed by clips of the movies from the
year.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Irene's friend from Hollywood Elsewhere had this to say about Hugh's opening number --
The opener was okay. Hugh Jackman was relaxed and into it as far as it went. We were all watching an Oscar ceremony at the Ambassador Hotel in 1937. Where's Fredric March? Jackman sang a bit of a hokey medley song, okay, but the silly-foolish energy appealed. Anne Hathaway, I felt, did herself proud. Chummy, loose, felt fine. Btw, some theatre board posters have already put in a wish list for a Hugh-Anne team up for the movie remake of CAROUSEL, if that ever happens ( part of Hugh's production company's future projects)

Yeah, I had a fleeting thought that there was *something* behind Hugh picking Anne that we don't know about, but that just could be me being suspicious
LOL.
And the musical number was a boy meets girl/boy loses girl/getting back together thing if you listen to the order of the songs and what they were. Hugh even says at one point something like "the best part of breaking up is making up." I noticed SJP behind Kate too - of course probably no one but us knows why he said hi to her LOL. Hugh, Kate and all the Oscar winners were on Oprah's show the next day. Hugh was still on such a high - he sounded like an excited kid! When Kate came out, at one point she said (paraphrasing) "and how about Hugh!!!! He did such a great job - I said to Sam (Mendes, her director hubby) that he was in his element and having the time of his life!" I wouldn't doubt that he will get an Emmy nomination for this. |

Hugh and Anne - hmmm...now you've got me thinking. Did you see how Anne was vigorously clapping for Hugh all the time?
A second EMMY hopefully to pair up with his first one ( for the 2004 TONYs)
Btw, he also acknowledged Marissa Tomei with a kiss on the cheek - they worked together in the movie Someone Like You. Plus, I think nominee Viola Davis portrayed a small part ( the lady cop who called him "Fancy Pants") in Kate and Leopold. And the soft touch on Kate Winslet's cheek - they did do a joint promotion for Flushed Away ( including jumping down the huge slide...and singing parts of Singin' in the Rain in The View). Kate is my other candidate for the role of Julie Jordan ( albeit a contemporized feisty role) in Carousel. Of course my ultimate fantasy, if it is not too late, is to see Hugh reprise the role of Joe Gillis with either Meryl Streep ( or Barbra)

Anne was delightful at the Oscars because she seemed genuinely excited about everything (especially since this was her first time). And I second that Carousel
remake with him and Hathaway. That would be divine.

Barbara was very shy when Hugh and Mat did the lap dance on her ( they were, technically speaking, just dancing on either side of her
)...but this time, she
initiated the request Interesting that he said "Act" when Baba asked him which he preferred of the triple threats of sing-dance-act! He was asked in another pre-Oscars interview what he plans to do next - and among the possibilities is go back to the stage, maybe even some Shakespeare. My heart went thumping - that is one more role that I would like to see him in. Maybe in his favourite play HENRY V, which has one of the best showstopping speeches in The Bard's collection?
