So how do you like this one? This is the Australian correspondent at AICN, who hated the movie.

THAT IS BEYOND EXCITING!!!!!!!! And exactly how I always thought the opening number would be, an original medley of the big movies and now with Baz and CM, I
bet the sets are going to change after each sections of the song focusing on the movies, so the sets are going to change to match the movie along with the
dancers and music tone/song itself.

Oh man that sounds beyond amazing. Good to hear the CM and Baz are apart of this - seems they're still in good spirits about the whole awards show thingy!

Oh WOW!!
It should be a mix of high comedy and lush spectacle! People want to see great visuals ( but not overly long) and people want to laugh, too
I suspect that Oscars producers Condon and Mark ( who have excellent musical entertainment pedigrees - Dreamgirls, etc) and Hugh himself may have already conceptualized the theme and tone of the opening number but will probably leave the execution to Baz and CM. It will most likely be a collaborative effort from the parties concerned. Hugh's Opening number for the 2004 TONYs ( called ONE NIGHT, based on the song from DREAMGIRLS) where all the nominated shows were featured as well as some high-kicking with the famous Rockettes is considered as one of the best in the TONYs more- than- 60- years history ( and nobody beats Broadway when it comes to musical spectacle!). The 2009 Oscars could very well be its new competitor!

You want to know why Oscar host Hugh Jackman has been seen all over town lately? Well, he has asked Luhrmann and Catherine Martin -- the director's wife -- to choreograph and produce a big opening musical number for him for the Oscars. Well, if the Oscar people let Baz and CM choreograph the opening of their huge 'comeback' broadcast, they must be in good favour with the Academy, which further proves that all this negativity surrounding Australia is something that has been created by vindictive media I really hope that what Fox News said is true! |

I reckon he would have been a bit torn if it wasn't for CM's nomination?
But hey, Baz is such a lovely person, I reckon he would have done it regardless, even if it was just to help out Hugh! |

lol of course he was. And at the end of the day, who really says no to the Academy, right?
Its such a tough gig being an Academy Awards host, I know Hugh has shown he can do a great job with hosting, but lest face it the Tonys crowd are a different bunch in many ways. Im really looking forward to this collaborative effort. A few months back we were thinking there might not be much to watch for, now we have a host, a nom and ...er, a Baz. lol ![]()

RHPS Magenta wrote: Talk about torn - how about executive producer Bill Condon, whose movie "Dreamgirls" was snubbed for best picture a few years ago? There's an interview of Hugh in the new Entertainment Weekly (with Obama on the cover) about the Oscars. I should buy it and scan it. One funny thing, if you saw the Tony's, in his performance as Peter Allen he dragged Sarah Jessica Parker on stage (it's on YouTube). He said he was scanning the audience and Nicole was right in the first row, and he said she's notoriously shy, and she mouthed to him don't you dare!

"Some people nervous on the front row all of a sudden ??" - he teased..." I feel like a little sex in the city" ( that let off Nicole, who
was seated with sister Antonia and Deb)
I think Oscar hosting is difficult in the sense that it is really quite a dull program and one needs to make it very exciting. It also does not help that the large TV audience may not necessarily appreciate the few musical numbers accompanying the nominated songs or even just a lavish opening musical number ( I hope Baz is aware that the worst reception ever was for that lavish musical spectacle with Snow White and Rob Lowe and a cast of plenty some years back - they are still talking about how horrid and dull it was!)... It is also a static audience - no interaction with the host, unless one gets up the stage to make an acceptance speech. So the audience picks up the rather flat atmosphere of the show and sometimes many ( moi, included) try to derive excitement looking at what the actresses/actors are wearing when moving down to the podium or going up the stage... or how they might flub their lines ...or how the winners occasionally lose their poise But Tony hosting, especially if one has to perform ( at least in the opening number) is more difficult, performance-wise, because many of the actors/actresses seated on the ground floor at RCMH are triple -threat talents themselves! You'd better be able to sing with a legit Broadway voice and dance like Bob Fosse! Plus deliver the Bruce Villanch ( also the Oscar gag writer in the past) lines with the finesse of a stand-up comedian ( many actors seated on the ground floor are skilled in comedy - one of the funniest actors I have seen is Denis O'Hare - funnier than the best movie comic, as far as I am concerned). But what makes it easy for someone with a theatre background is his experience performing in front of a live audience ( especially a Broadway audience)! And if you are used to breaking the fourth wall - it's somewhat easy picking. Btw, Billy Crystal is often dubbed as the best Oscar host ever. In 2005, he was in a very successful one-man show on Broadway. Hugh was supposed to be hosting the evening ceremonies for the season's ending TONYs night...but when the program opened, the stage showed Billy Crystal being raised from below to stage level. So, he took over and was running some great gags...until he received a phone call from the neglected official MC...Enters Hugh and they do a protracted funny banter...Billy was tops but Hugh held his own! In that same night, Hugh sang the Bernstein/Sondheim song "Somewhere" with Aretha Franklin ( who was the only singer to sing at the recent presidential inauguration in the USA) - so he really can deliver some seemingly impossible tasks! It looks like the issue of a new kind of Oscar host and the kind of change in the program is generating as strong a buzz as the nominees themselves, for the first time in many years. But it won't be easy sailing for Hugh! ... And there he was seen with son Oscar walking from a game of football ( soccer) at the park after returning from Vancouver... instead of perhaps being heavily involved in the preparations - how cool he seems to be

Ah yes, brings back memories! Can't wait to see what they have cooked up for the opening at the Oscars!
I bought Entertainment Weekly - I'll scan the article tonight. Hugh was in London on the promotion blitz for Australia when he got the call in the middle of the night that they wanted him as host. He said Deb was jumping up and down on the bed and he couldn't get back to sleep. And he talks about getting naked again LOL - the interviewer even suggested recreating the shower scene! |

According to the buzz, what precipitated the midnight call was because someone scooped the news ( Nikki Finke) prematurely, before the AMPAS and Condon/Mark
were ready to make the formal announcement. So, they had to immediately get in touch with Hugh to make the formal offer ( I guess some discussions were already
taking place).
