IC, well thanks for your welcome and I think I'm starting to get in the spirit of things here already and will soon catch on with the lingo. In the spirit of the master the definitive word in any line should be repeated twice right ? announcement, announcement: spectacular, spectacular etc. Well, to answer your question Kate it wasn't actually done with a synthesizer, synthesizer but rather with a software sampler and sample library which is still nominally synthetic I grant you. The difference being the multitude of discreet samples in terms of notes and articulations were originally played by an orchestra in a real hall with the ambience captured also. It's funny you should mention Hollywood because the particular library was recorded by a Hollywood orchestra in a concert hall in LA and is known in the industry for capturing that sound and flavour.

It terms of your own tastes in relation to the movie however, you could just as easily imagine the same motif in a more melancholy mode played by solo violin.

Sorry, didn't mean to have a dig at Craig A, just the weather there in Glasgow. There might be some merit in being acclimatised to the particular ambience and weather when trying to capture a mood musically, and in Aus. of course it's truly Scorchio. You can imagine how it is out in the desert, the heat, the dust, the still air and did I mention the flies ? let's face it if the producers really wanted to go for a truly naturalistic approach with this movie they should call it something like 'Flies in The Face of Reason' Sorry to be facetious in this hallowed domain...couldn't resist that one !

Back to the music though, if I could contribute a couple of pieces of 'additional' music to complement the main composer I'd be more than happy. I've also done one called 'The Cattle Drive' perhaps you'd like to hear that next time ?

I am slightly crestfallen that you heard Synth and not Strings, that sound library cost me $5000 !! didn't it fool you at all ?

Anyway, on a more serious note, I can't think if any other director [other than within the strict 'musical' format of a bygone era] whose use of music would be so adroitly instrumental in 'setting the scene' to the point of defining the scene, and the way it's been done so far has taken us into uncharted territory. If he continues in the same vein with the three epics planned, where various scenes are predicated upon music or songs that have already been selected, wouldn't that be a first for the epic genre ? There's a scene in 'Amadeus' where the drama and dialogue is being set to pre defined music [in this case Mozart] and the results are unique and marvelous and couldn't be arrived at in any other way. It has to be done just right of course, and there's so many variables to consider. With the notion of 'epic' and 'musical' being diametrically opposed, if Baz can pull it off he's a wizard. A Wizard of Aus. in fact.

Thanks for your comments about the music, it's very encouraging. Here's another tune with a touch of folk flavour, certainly in the intro with the guitar refrain I think. I read somewhere Baz talking about folk elements for the movie. It will be a good test for your finely tuned ears to work out what's real here. Of course you have to imagine the scenes it would relate to to get the effect....

Imagining the vast vistas of the outback with distant lonesome drovers moving as insignificant specks in a panoply of majestic emptiness. This is the introductory lone violin theme; a sensation of constancy and protracted momentum is introduced with the folk guitar refrain, which itself is suggestive of a journey. As the camera zooms in to show the cattlemen in close relief, a hillock is traversed by the cameras perspective coupled with the accent of the cattlemen, at which point a thousand head of cattle is revealed and the main music theme with accompanying drums is introduced. You also have to imagine the ambient sound effects, thunder of the cattle, shouting cattle men etc.
