According to our friend Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits, FOX is bringing the Baz Luhrmann (“Australia“, “Strictly Ballroom“) directed films “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) & “Romeo + Juliet” (1996) to Blu-ray Disc on October 19th. The releases are stated to include the following bonus materials:

“Moulin Rouge will include an exclusive Spectacular, Spectacular Picture-in-Picture viewing mode with audio commentary (by Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Donald M. McAlpine and Craig Pearce, and featuring behind-the-scenes footage and stills), the A Creative Adventure featurette, an Introduction by Baz Luhrmann, uncut and unreleased footage (including the Father & Son alternate opening and Nicole Kidman’s first vocal test), 6 production featurettes (The Stars, The Writers, The Design, The Dance, The Music and The Cutting Room), The Making of Moulin Rouge documentary, BD-Live: Live Lookup and more.“

“Romeo+Juliet will include a new Shaking Up Shakespeare Picture-in-Picture viewing mode with audio commentary (by Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Donald M. McAlpine and Craig Pearce and featuring behind-the-scenes footage and stills), uncut footage, the Romeo+Juliet: The Music featurette, filmmaker and interview galleries, BD-Live: Live Lookup and more.“

The titles will each carry a MSRP of $34.99, and though no tech specs are yet available, it can be assumed that each release will be presented in 1080p, using DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Executed appropriately, these releases have the potential to be exciting Hi-Def presentations, as “Romeo + Juliet” yields an interesting soundtrack (involving music by Everclear, Garbage, and The Cardigans), “Moulin Rouge!” consisting of its lyrical-melting-pot influences through out its musical numbers, and both rendering elaborate visual settings. Both titles are available for PRE-ORDER over at Amazon now with each carrying a $18.49 price tag.

Baz on Blu-ray! “Romeo” and “Moulin Rouge!” getting hi-def treatment

Hollywoodnews.com: Certain filmmakers seems born for Blu-ray. Take Baz Luhrmann, for instance. The Aussie talent’s flair for vibrant visuals should go with the crisp, clear Blu-ray conversion like peanut butter goes with jelly.

We’ll find out for sure come Oct. 19, when two of Luhrmann’s groundbreaking films get the Blu-ray treatment from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

“William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the tragic leads, and Luhrmann’s stunning musical, “Moulin Rouge!,” will make their way to Blu-ray on extras-laden platters.

As per Fox’s release:

Flaunting a new high-definition transfer and spectacular picture-in-picture experience, both Blu-ray discs of the award-winning films boast new uncut footage, BD-LIVE: Live Lookup Powered by IMDb, as well as a host of other never-before-seen material produced by Luhrmann and his creative team at Bazmark. And for first time ever, Moulin Rouge! includes an alternate opening sequence featuring the Cat Stevens hit “Father & Son.”

Discussing the latest in home-video technology, Luhrmann said,
“As a fan, I’ve seen examples where the technology is so powerful, a much-loved film goes in for a Blu-ray treatment and, somewhat like a friend who has had too much surgery, you no longer recognize them.

“Mindful of the relationship evolved with many fans of these two films, the esteemed digital intermediate colorist Jan Yarbrough, who recently completed color restorations of North by Northwest and The Godfather films, and I sat together day in and day out seeking to maintain the color philosophy forged in the cauldron of shooting, while giving full reign to the power of high-definition technology to deliver a Moulin Rouge and an R+J that audiences will recognize but are nevertheless realized at the highest possible visual quality.

“As a filmmaker you never know whether you will ever have a chance to revisit movies again, and so we have gone about this with the attitude that this could be for the last time.”
