Nothing very exciting, but this morning I was looking through the weekend magazine (actually looking for news on Nic and Keith!) and there was an article on crystals. Which didn't interest me at all, until I turned the page and saw a photo of... Satine! It only mentioned MR very briefly, though (it was talking about the crystals on her Black Diamonds outfit). Hehe, just made me smile to see MR pop up when I wasn't expecting it!

Yeah, it's always nice to see it appear now and then, even after 5 years! I mean, who ever talks about A Beautiful Mind now? ;D
I guess MR just sticks in peoples memories. Which isn't a wonder, really. How could you possibly forget it? Haha! |

Voters had time of their lives with Dirty Dancing
THE best dance film of all time is Dirty Dancing but a totally different kind of dirty dancing is the worst ... movie flop Showgirls. Patrick Swayze's hit, a favourite with girls' nights in, beat off classics such as West Side Story and Grease to be voted best ever for its dancefloor moves. But Showgirls, the critically-panned story of exotic dancers in Las Vegas, easily won the title of worst dance movie in the poll by drinks firm Shloer. Showgirls has been voted the worst film of the decade in other award ceremonies. But there was no room for any movie starring, perhaps, the greatest dancers in cinema history from Gene Kelly to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Cyd Charisse. Grease was the second best dance film of all time but Grease Two was among the 10 worst. Dirty Dancing sequel, Havana Nights, is also to be found in the truly awful category. Despite their Oscar winning success, both Cabaret and Chicago were named among the 10 worst dance movies along with howlers such as Village People's Can't Stop the Music. Cheesy dialogue, strange plots and unexciting dance moves left many viewers cold, said the survey. Cabaret may have suffered because it starred Liza Minnelli, whose public persona leaves some people cold. Moulin Rouge and Coyote Ugly were among modern offerings to appear in the best list. Tinseltown's musical dares
August 25, 2006 Razzamatazz used to rule the silver screen. From the 1930s to the 1960s, movie musicals bustled with Busby Berkeley chorus lines, sprightly Irving Berlin tunes, fancy footwork by Gene Kelly and singing Austrians in lederhosen. Unfortunately, shifts in public taste, the decline of the big Hollywood studios and expensive flops like 1973's Lost Horizon dealt a harsh blow to the genre. Such extravaganzas may be harder to come by nowadays. Yet the musical survives in many forms, from film adaptations of Broadway hits and fully-fledged fantasias created for the screen to performance-heavy showcases for singers-turned-thespians. This weekend sees the arrival of Idlewild starring OutKast. Though essentially a period drama with songs, it's also a hip-hop update of the musicals Hollywood used to make for African-American audiences, movies like 1943's Stormy Weather with Lena Horne and Cab Calloway. Every year, there's a handful of films attempting to revitalize the tropes and traditions of the movie musical -- here's what worked and why. MOULIN ROUGE (2001) Director Baz Luhrmann pulled out all the stops in his attempt to remodel the musical for a post-MTV audience. Though the endeavour smacks of stylistic overkill and could've done without the Like a Virgin cabaret number, it's a triumph of chutzpah. In constructing his meta-musical, Luhrmann not only borrows from the great Hollywood pictures but parallel traditions in India (the musical still reigns supreme in Bollywood) and France. Not for nothing are the great sixties' musicals of Jacques Demy -- The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort -- still so cherished. Courtesan and penniless sitar player make a little history
Monday, September 04, 2006 ![]() Whenever the American Film Institute releases one of its all-time-best-movie lists, there's usually a storm of controversy over what made the list and what was left off. Yesterday at the Hollywood Bowl, the AFI named its Top 25 list of the top musicals in movie history. The list was chosen from a short list 250 films by an AFI jury comprised of more than 500 filmmakers, critics, musicians, composers and film historians. Interestingly, just two films were selected from the current millennium: Chicago, which was ranked 12th, and Moulin Rouge! which placed 25th. Spanning a century of film music and counting down from 25 to Number 1 throughout the evening, Director John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performed excerpts from each of the winning musicals, many of them accompanied by favorite movie scenes shown on the bowl's big video screens. While television broadcasts have announced the previous nine installments of AFI's 100 Years series, following the success of last year's AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores, this is now the second time an AFI countdown was revealed before a live audience. To see the entire list, go here. #25 out of 250...pretty damned Spectacular, Spectacular!!! ******************** ![]() |
